‘The Mandalorian’ will have Werner Herzog in as a ‘real villain’ with Taika Waititi voicing IG-88

The upcoming live-action Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian will feature some interesting cast moves. Legendary German director Werner Herzog has been set, playing a villain of sorts in the new Disney+ series. Additionally, fan favorite and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will voice the android bounty hunter IG-88.

Speaking with IndieWire, Herzog said: “Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in The Mandalorian, the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to [act] because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.”

The fact that Herzog clarifies the size of his role as a “real small part” makes fans speculate if he’s going to be introduced and then immediately killed off or play some aged version of Boba Fett after surviving the Sarlaac Pit.

Favreau took to Instagram to show Waititi recording in the sound booth, and it looks like he’s doing voice work for the bounty hunter droid, IG-88.

Expect more details after Star Wars Celebration where Lucasfilm has confirmed that executive producer and writer Jon Favreau will appear alongside fellow executive producer and director Dave Filoni, in a “special panel discussion” for the upcoming world. The announcement steered clear of specifics, teasing only that we’ll “learn about the perilous world of The Mandalorian.”

The panel will be held on Sunday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. live on the Celebration stage.

Episodes of the show will be directed by Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, and Waititi.

The Mandalorian, which stars Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte.

Here’s the description of The Mandalorian, which will debut on Disney+ sometime in Fall 2019:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The series will be written and executive produced by Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau, as previously announced, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). It will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.
