Leonardo DiCaprio wins Oscar, talks ‘climate change’
After earning his first-ever Academy Award, Leonardo DiCaprio used part of his acceptance speech to turn the event even more political with a climate change rant.
DiCaprio called climate change the “most urgent threat facing our entire species” and blamed big corporations for contaminating initiative on the issue.
“Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted…”
Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin Atlantic was quick to tweet support: Climate change is real – it is happening right now…Let us not take this planet for granted — @richardbranson
Then came Bill Nye: Mr @LeoDiCaprio told the truth about climate change. There’s a great deal to do. Let’s get to work. — @BillNye
Christian May, Editor-in-Chief at the London-based business news outlet City A.M., chastised DiCaprio for hypocritically decrying corporate greed after indulging in greed of his own.
Di Caprio slams corporate greed & sobs over climate change, charges $20m for a film & takes 6 private jets in a week. Somebody have a word. – @ChristianJMay
Politics took center stage, with Chris Rock thrust into the center of the of Oscar’s racism and the climax of climate change lectures. The result was an 8-year low in the ratings.
“Oscars got a 10.4 rating – another multi-year low. Now, if last year’s increase of 700,000 total viewers in the very final numbers, are any indication, things could go up for the Oscars in the next couple of days but likely not enough to break that 8-year low mark,” Deadline noted.
