Olivia Wilde confirmed to return for ‘Tron 3’
Disney surprised fans by announcing that a Tron: Legacy sequel would arrive sooner than later. Tron 3, rumored to possibly be titled Tron: Ascension, will have Olivia Wilde back beside Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn.
“The pair will reprise their characters from 2010’s Tron: Legacyin the sequel, which is being directed by Joseph Kosinski,” reports THR on the pair.
“Disney has been developing a sequel to Legacy since the movie grossed $400 million worldwide. Hedlund in 2012 said he would return to the visual-effects-heavy franchise, but that was when the project was circling a 2014 start,” they recounted.
The project may shoot this fall, likely in Vancouver, British Columbia, way ahead of many predictions.
Back in 2013, Wilde said,
They have to deal with Quorra. I loved the collaborative effort that was ‘TRON,’ and I think that now with the time to really focus on character development, after we’ve established so much exposition, we could really have some fun. I think everyone’s game for it – there’s so many directions we could go.
Legacy ended by alluding to the importance of Cillian Murphy, the son of the original Tron villain Ed Dillinger, who has already established his evil schemes. Bruce Boxleitner will almost certainly return after playing Alan Bradley/Tron in the previous films.
At this point, with more casting details surely to emerge, the new Tron film could likely arrive in the spring of 2017.
