4 Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

For many people, nothing can affect work and home life quite like a lack of sleep. Sometimes it is difficult to pin down what exactly is causing sleep disturbances, but by changing certain habits such as caffeine consumption or our exercise routine, we can often find just the right lifestyle to give us a perfect night’s rest. Here are just four ways to get a better night’s sleep, and why they might just change your life for the better.

1. Skip the Stimulants
If you’ve ever taken a break from coffee or even reduced your caffeine intake for a few days, you probably already know that sleep can suffer where stimulants are involved. To get a good night’s rest, try ordering a decaf during your morning coffee run. If going cold-turkey with caffeine isn’t right for you (and for many of us it isn’t!), try a “half-caf” brew the next time you’re craving coffee: Half-caffeinated and half-decaffeinated coffee, a half-caf will brighten your morning without overloading your senses with caffeine. If you really have trouble sleeping, try keeping your coffee consumption limited to before noon, or switch to decaf in the afternoons and evenings. You’ll be sleeping better in no time!

2. Invest in a New Mattress
If you have trouble sleeping, it may be that you’re not comfortable enough on your current mattress. A new mattress can do wonders for setting healthy new sleep patterns, because our body posture will be improved while we sleep. If you’re not sure what kind of mattress would benefit you the most, try contacting professionals who can advise you on the best mattress for you. Your body will thank you!

3. Find Out if You Have Sleep Apnea
Despite the fact that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, the condition often goes untreated because sufferers don’t know that they have it. Caused when our airway becomes blocked during sleep, the condition makes people wake up constantly throughout the night, preventing the kind of deep REM rest that is necessary to regain our energy. Fortunately, there are treatments available for sleep apnea that can give people with the condition a new lease on life.

4. Be Sure to Exercise
As many healthcare professionals have known for years, exercise is something a true cure-all when it comes to problems with sleep or other problems. Not only does exercise promote good feelings by causing the brain to release endorphins, you’ll also get a good night’s sleep as your body naturally rests from the influx of activity that exercise provides. Whether it’s an evening walk or a jog with friends, nothing helps promote healthy sleep quite like a good exercise routine.

For these reasons, there are a wide variety of ways to get a better night’s sleep. Whether you’re cutting back on the caffeine or simply dozing off after a fun exercise session at the gym, it is truly amazing how much benefit is to be had when we develop new, healthy habits. Enjoy the journey as you discover a newer, more rested you!
