This Day in History: Snoopy walks on two legs for the first time
Snoopy started out like a real dog, walking on four legs and living inside of his dog house, but the Peanuts star changed over the years.
While it’s rumored that Snoopy first walked upright on January 5, 1956 – that is incorrect. Snoopy got a bit of coaching from his owner Charlie Brown and never looked back – see the cartoon below. (June 28, 1958)
Walking was just the first step to becoming more “human” as Snoopy would begin to sleep on top of his doghouse beginning in 1958. (check out the cartoon below)
Snoopy is an incredible icon, on the scale with Mickey Mouse or Superman. Even a younger generation, not followers of the Peanuts comic strip, are well aware of the famous pet of Charlie Brown.
Today, 58 years ago, the beagle from Daisy Hill Puppy Farm made his first steps to a more ‘human-like’ role and lifestyle. The rest, as they say, is history.

Creator Charles Schultz had a pet dog as a child, rather intelligent by accounts, but it was a pointer not a beagle even though there was a “certain physical resemblance.”
