Texas cyclospora outbreak rises to 122 cases
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) said that there has been 122 cyclospora cases reported in the state in July, according to the health department website.
Health officials say most of the cases are from north Texas, particularly from the Dallas and Fort Worth area.
No common exposure source for this outbreak has been identified. Earlier today, Iowa and Nebraska health officials have linked the parasite to prepackaged bagged salad mix.
Texas health authorities say the cases may be linked to the ongoing multistate Cyclospora outbreak in Iowa and Nebraska.
The following counties have reported Cyclospora infection: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Guadalupe, Harris, Hidalgo, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Montague, Parker, Potter, Smith, Tarrant, Tom Green, Travis, Victoria and Williamson.
People become infected with Cyclospora by ingesting sporulated oocysts, which are the infective form of the parasite. This most commonly occurs when food or water contaminated with feces is consumed.
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they have been notified of 372 cases of Cyclospora infection from the following 16 health departments: Iowa, Texas, Nebraska, Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York City, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio.
