Philippines: 380 new HIV cases reported in January, most ever in one month
According to the January 2013 Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry report, there were 380 new HIV cases recorded in just the first month of the year, which is a nearly 80 percent increase from the same period last year when 212 cases were recorded.

Health Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag said this is the highest increase since the government began monitoring HIV/AIDS cases in 1984, according to a Inquirer report Saturday.
This amounts to a dozen new cases daily.
A large part of the cases were still acquired through sexual contact with 376, with 307 cases coming from the males-having-sex-with male (MSM) accounting for 82 percent.
Homosexual contact resulted to 189 new cases followed by bisexual contact with 118 and heterosexual contact with 69.
Tayag said unsafe sexual practices like “bareback orgies” among men who have sex with men (MSM) were to blame for the worsening HIV situation in the country.
Of the total for the month, 25 cases are already in full-blown AIDS.
Most of the new cases came from Metro Manila (48%); Calabarzon (15%); Central Luzon (9%); Davao (8%) and Central Visayas (6%).
