Movie News: ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ ‘Suicide Squad 2’ casting and a new ‘Hellboy’ trailer

Just a round-up of news on big films headed to theaters or in the works.

A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow has been long rumored and appears to edging forward (pun intended) with both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt returning.

Fans get a new trailer teasing the R-rated Hellboy reboot from director Neil Marshall with David Harbour starring.

Edge of Tomorrow 2

The science fiction fans loved Edge of Tomorrow and a follow-up has been rumored for awhile.

THR says Warner Bros. is finally getting serious about Edge of Tomorrow 2. Matthew Robinson, a writer with credits on The Invention of Lying and Monster Trucks, is now set to pen the script.

According to the report director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are all expected to return if they like Robinson’s script.

Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Manga All You Need Is KillEdge of Tomorrow had Cruise playing a military PR man stuck in a Groundhog Day-like time loop during alien invasion is unfolding. Cruise’s only chance of hope is to team-up with a skilled soldier, played by Blunt.

That first film earned $370 million globally on a $178 budget, a success with critics and has grown in popularity over the years on home entertainment.

Will Smith will NOT return for Suicide Squad 2

Variety reports that Will Smith has opted not to reprise his role as Deadshot due to scheduling conflicts.

NOTE: That appears to have nothing to do with film or James Gunn.

“Sources say scheduling was the ultimate factor and that the decision was made on amicable terms between both sides with no hard feelings,” they write. “Though the studio has never confirmed who would be returning for The Suicide Squad, insiders say the studio has always wanted its biggest stars like Smith and Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn in the first pic, to return while figuring out other casting decisions along the way.”

Gunn, who was brought on last year as the new writer and director, is hoping to start production this fall, which adds a ticking clock element to getting things out before it impacts pre-production.

The release date is currently set for Aug. 6, 2021.

Hellboy trailer!

A new Hellboy reboot trailer is here, and it provides fans a better look at David Harbour‘s new take on the Mike Mignolia’s red demon.

The Stranger Things star is joined by Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Thomas Haden Church.

Hellboy opens April 12, 2019.
