More sequels coming: ‘GI Joe 3,’ ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3’ and a part 4, ‘Jurassic Park 4’

More and more sequels are getting the greenlight from Hollywood, sometimes even before one film even opens in theaters.

Case in point, Sony has approved The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 with target release dates of June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018.

“Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years,” said Jeff Blake, Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures. (full press release below)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives in theaters next summer on May 2, 2014.

Jurassic Park IV

Jurassic Park IV was initially targeted for a very rushed release in 2014, Universal wisely decided not to rush production and recently announced that the production had been postponed in order to give director Colin Trevorrow enough time to adequately prep the shoot.

In an article this week by Variety: “Sources have told Variety that Steven Spielberg, who is exec producing the pic, is currently in town working with producers and director Colin Trevorrow on the script before he jumps into pre-production on his directing job American Sniper.

While there is no exact date, but Jurassic Park IV will arrive sometime in 2015. Coming Soon published a photo from the Licensing Expo showing a banner with the 2015 date. Check it out here

While GI Joe: Retaliation may not have been a monster success, earning $122 million in the US, the worldwide gross was over $369 million so a third film will indeed happen.

A new report has surfaced announcing that Retaliationhelmer Jon M. Chu is making a deal with Paramount and MGM to return and direct the next installment of the franchise.  Chu—whose previous filmography was filled with dance-centric pics like Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never—successfully retooled the G.I. Joe franchise with Retaliation, despite the fact that the film was postponed at the last minute in order to needlessly post-convert the pic to 3D.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has promised that the third film would include more ninjas:

“We haven’t spent any time considering what the next movie is.  There are elements we’re really excited about.  I’d like to do more ninja story.  That’s really fun, and I think the mythology will support some really cool things.  You know, I was a really huge fan of the TV show Combat! as a kid, and there’s an intimacy the show had because their budget demanded it—it’s always a bunch of guys and they’re going down a ditch.  I’d like us to do some of that kind of stuff where you’re really on an intimate level.  ‘Surprising’ isn’t the right word, but ‘gratifying’ how Dwayne and Channing’s ‘home scenes’, if you would, they’re not buddy scenes but they translated that way somehow.  So they’re basic character scenes, and they’re domesticated scenes.  How well that played in the scale of what we’re trying to do.  I’d like to see more of that.

Spider-Man News:

The next two films in the story of Peter Parker will be released on June 10, 2016, and on May 4, 2018, respectively.
