Elizabeth Warren: end private insurance, don’t restrict abortion, won’t oppose gun confiscation
Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren said on Wednesday night that if she becomes president that she will eliminate private insurance, force everyone on government healthcare, and will not support any restrictions on abortion.
“Many people watching at home have health insurance coverage through their employer,” NBC’s Lester Holt said. “Who here would abolish their private insurance in favor of a government-run plan?”
Warren and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio both raised their hands.
When asked if she supported any restricts on abortion, Warren refused to answer.
“I would make certain that every woman has access to the full range of reproductive health care services — and that includes birth control. It includes abortion. It includes everything for a woman,” she replied. “And I want to add on that, it’s not enough for us to expect the courts to protect us,” she said. “Forty-seven years ago, Roe v. Wade was decided and we’ve all looked to the courts all that time, as state after state has undermined Roe, has put in exceptions — has come right up to the edge of taking away protections.”
On gun ownership, Warren refused to rule out whether she would have the government go door-to-door and confiscate semi-automatic firearms from law-abiding Americans.
NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Warren the question, and, when she dodged answering it, he pressed her about it again.
“You didn’t address, do you think the federal government needs to go and figure out a way to get the guns?” Todd again pressed Warren. Warren again refused to answer, saying that gun violence needed to be treated as “a serious research problem.”
In May, The Washington Post reported that “over and over again, roughly 7 out of every 10 Americans report that they’re fairly satisfied with the quality of their personal coverage.”
Fox News noted that, according to a 2018 Gallup poll, “over 80 percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal in the third trimester, while only 13 percent think it should be legal.”
