‘Dark Knight Rises’ star Tom Hardy offers a ‘Mad Max’ update
At the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, while promoting John Hillcoat’s gangster film “Lawless,” Tom Hardy spoke about the George Miller reboot of the “Mad Max” franchise. Hardy will play the famous cult figure portrayed by Mel Gibson is the first three films.
Empire caught up with the “Inception” actor this weekend, asking him about an official start date.
“We keep moving that around, you know? I’ve been on stand-by for two years… but it’s all part of it. It’s kind of the cool thing to do, to be elusive with dates and all that.”
Miller is rumored to be filming “Mad Max: Fury Road” and a fifth film (“Mad Max: Furiosa”) back-to-back, possibly over the course of an entire year. The bearded Hardy relied on sarcasm and humor to counter the question.
“It was going to be a year of filming, then six months, and now we’re supposed to be doing it in six days. It’s a musical – we’re going to go around shopping centers in a little wagon and sing songs. People were expecting big, but we’re going to give them small. It’ll be a live, free-running musical and it’s coming to a place near you soon.”
Hardy will play the key villain, Bane, in this summer’s conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
Anne Hathaway joins the cast as well as Catwoman with Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine, all reprising their roles from the first two films.
“The Dark Knight Rises” arrives in theaters on July 20, 2012.
No release date has been set for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” but will co-star Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult and Richard Norton.
