Australia: Sewing needles in strawberries prompt police investigation
Queensland Authorities and NSW Police have confirmed that six brands of strawberries are now implicated in the strawberry contamination incident.
The contamination relates to what appears to be sewing needles and pins inserted in strawberries.
On Wednesday, Queensland Police Service announced an investigation into the contamination, which appears to have originated at a Queensland-based supplier.
While three brands – “Berry Obsession”, “Berry Licious”, and “Donnybrook Berries” – have been recalled nationwide, it is now believed the contamination may also affect – “Love Berry”, “Delightful Strawberries”, and “Oasis” brands of strawberries.
These brands are believed to be sold in stores in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory.
Authorities are warning consumers in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory to throw the affected punnets out or return to the place of purchase after several incidents of sewing needles were found in strawberries.
Consumers are urged to check their fridges and freezers for stored product and dispose of any food which may contain this product.
Police are urging anyone who has purchased contaminated product to take the punnet to their local police station immediately.
