‘Arrow’ season 2 adds Grant Gustin as Flash, first photos released, Michael Jai White as bronze tiger

Glee bad guy Grant Gustin has landed his first major role, signing on to play Barry Allen aka The Flash on the CW’s proposed Arrow spinoff.

City of HeroesHe will appear in three episodes of Arrow this coming season before headlining his own show.

In a new interview with TV Guide, executive producer Marc Guggenheim opened up about a new recurring threat to Arrow’s Starling City: Michael Jai White’s Bronze Tiger.

“He’s basically the best of the best, so he has come to Starling City to see if the Hood can give him a challenge,” said Guggenheim. The contest of champions is set to take place in the season’s second episode, which is set to air on October 16th. But Bronze Tiger won’t exactly be playing it solo when he debuts, Guggenheim explains. “To that end, he has aligned himself with China White [played by Kelly Hu] and the Chinese Triad.”

The exec didn’t stop there as more photos have landed.

“Michael Jai White is playing Bronze Tiger and he is such a badass,” said Guggenheim. “His performance, our kick-ass stunt department, our incredibly talented costumer designer, and our very gifted props master…they’ve all combined their A-games to create a really great representation of this DC Comics character.”

Manu Bennett, the Spartacus actor can’t wait to show fans more sides to his deadly mercenary of a character, Slade Wilson, based on what he said in a new interview with Access Hollywood.

City of HeroesBennett talked about his time as the warrior Crixus on Starz’s Spartacus series, and how that compares to his work on Arrow.

“[‘Arrow’] is already bigger than ‘Spartacus’ in terms of viewership, and being part of a franchise like that, it’s really gonna sort of help me build an even stronger future in this industry,” he said. “And also, Slade Wilson, I know by what I’ve been told and the way that the character is already started to curve in the second season that he’s gonna be as big [of] a challenge as an acting role as what Crixus was and I think I can give him a lot of the light and shade that Crixus had, that I know the audience loves and appreciated in my performance as Crixus. So I think I’m again on a winning role and I can’t wait to embrace it further. I’m riding the tip of the arrow.”

Back to the Flash.

Barry Allen (Gustin) is a Central City assistant police forensic investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. A comic book fan boy, Barry is obsessed with the Arrow unaware that working with Oliver and Felicity to solve the crime has brought him right into the dangerous world of the vigilante. Kreisberg said last month that the actor who portrays Barry Allen will play him as “an ordinary man” when viewers meet him. “The character will be as grounded and realistic as possible,” he said. “That’s how we’ll get to know him. Then his life will get a bit faster.”

Arrow returns to the CW on October 9th.
