Samuel L Jackson talks ‘Captain Marvel,’ teases a different Nick Fury, with ‘two eyes’
Samuel L. Jackson has shed some light on what fans can expect to see from Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, a 2019 Marvel Studios film with Brie Larson playing the titular role.
While few details are known, it is a flashback story, set in the ’90s, before the Avengers ever thought of assembling and a different Nick Fury.
“We’re going back now, and I meet Captain Marvel in more of an origin story. You’ll see Nick Fury with another guy’s face, somebody that’s got two eyes, so that’s a whole big deal. You’ll see. It’s prior to the eye injury, no eye patch.”
The S.H.I.E.L.D. Director will at least make an appearance, but that role is still unclear. One eye or two, does it really matter? Jackson explain why it did for him.
“It’ll be easier to learn my lines. It’s one of those weird kind of things,” Jackson said of having two eyes. “The first day I shot as Nick Fury with one eye, I couldn’t remember my lines. I was tired since we were coming from somewhere, so I thought it was fatigue. Then I realized I had learned my lines with two eyes. So, I had to start blocking my eye to learn my lines. It’s a stupid kind of thing, but it totally worked.”
Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn co-star: Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers.
After great showings in Rogue One and Place Beyond the Pines, Mendelsohn will be the film’s major villain, possibly the tyrannical Kree officer, Yon-Rogg. In the comics, Rogg was originally an enemy of Mar-Vell’s who kidnapped Carol Danvers in an effort to draw out his former crew-mate. Their subsequent battle resulted in Danvers gaining her powers.
Captain Marvel will be the first major movie role for DeWanda Wise, after success with the Netflix show She’s Gotta Have It. Fans are already speculating that the role will be Monica Rambeau, a.k.a. Spectrum.
Captain Marvel is slated to arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.
