Nigeria reports first polio case of 2014
The African country of Nigeria, one of the three remaining polio endemic countries left on the globe, reported their first case of wild poliovirus 1 (WPV-1) in Kano State, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The case had onset of paralysis on 1 February, from Gaya Local Government Area (LGA), Kano.
Pakistan, another polio endemic country, reported three new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week, all from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA – two from North Waziristan and one from FR Bannu). The total number of cases for 2014 is now 24.
Both Syria and the Horn of Africa reported additional cases that are part of the 2013 tally.
In Syria, one new WPV1 case was reported in the past week (onset of paralysis on 1 October 2013 from Deir Al Zour). The total number of laboratory-confirmed WPV1 cases is 25.
On the Horn of Africa, Somalia reported an additional case of polio, a patient from Middle Shabelle who had onset of paralysis in August.
The total number of WPV1 cases (2013) in the Horn of Africa is now 217 (194 from Somalia, 14 from Kenya and nine from Ethiopia).
