Cambodia H5N1 avian influenza: 24 cases and 13 deaths as 10-year-old boy dies
The 10-year-old boy from Kampot province in the Kingdom of Cambodia who contracted human H5N1 avian influenza that was reported Friday, has died Saturday, becoming the country’s 13th person to die of bird flu this year, according to the Associated Press.
The child was confirmed positive for human H5N1 avian influenza on Thursday after he was admitted to the Kantha Bopha Hospital in Phnom Penh with fever, cough, sore throat, a distended abdomen and dyspnea. He was placed in critical condition being treated with Tamiflu. He died Saturday.
A joint statement from Cambodia’s Health Ministry and the World Health Organization (not currently available online) notes that the investigation into his infection shows that about a month before the boy became sick, about 30 chickens died suddenly in his village in the southern province of Kampot, and that he had carried dead poultry for his brother, who was preparing them for a meal.
Cambodia has reported 24 cases of human H5N1 avian influenza in 2013 so far, with 13 resulting in death.
