‘Penguins of Madagascar’ Film Review: action, humor, fun for the whole family

Back in 2005, fans of the Madagascar movie fell in love with the unique, spy-like, playful quartet of penguins. Now these fans can enjoy the entertainment of Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (Conrad Vernon) and Private (Christopher Knights) in the spinoff, Penguins of Madagascar.

The movie begins with a humorous, yet heartwarming story of how the group came together. The penguins later are kidnapped by Dave, the evil squid, who is really known as Dr. Octavius Brine.

His scheme is to kidnap all the penguins and use a special concoction on them in order to use them to take over the world. The quartet is rescued by a group of artic spies that call themselves the “North Wind.”

The group includes their wolf leader Agent Classified (Benedict Cumberbatch), a seal named Short Fuse (Ken Jeong) that handles anything involving explosives, Corporal the polar bear (Peter Stormare) who is all muscle, and Eva (Annet Mahendru), a snowy owl that knows anything necessary to complete any mission.

The two groups of spies are overly competitive and independent, so refusing to work together they go off on their own to stop the doctor. After multiple kidnappings, failures in missions and run-ins with each other, the groups try to form a plan together in order to stop Dave.

Overall, the movie is full of action and humor to keep any audience entertained. It is definitely a fun movie for the whole family. The humor and plot is similar to a mix of Megamind and Despicable Me 2. The characters are still just as entertaining and lovable as they were in the original Madagascar movie.

Penguins of Madagascar receives 2.5 out of 5 stars.
