Kamala Harris’s dad on her pot-smoking comment: Our family wants to ‘dissociate ourselves from this travesty
Just when you thought Kamala Harris was a favorite to win over Democrats and seize the 2020 nomination for president, Kamala’s dad objected to his daughter’s recent remarks on smoking pot.
Donald Harris gave a statement to Jamaica Global Online about his daughter’s interview on the New York Breakfast Club radio show: “My dear departed grandmothers … as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not, with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics.”
Kamala Harris “confessed” to smoking pot, saying that “I did inhale,” she said in winking reference to a notorious statement Bill Clinton made a quarter-century ago before answering a question from the radio host about pot legalization efforts.
“Half my family’s from Jamaica,” she said. “Are you kidding me?”
That’s the part that apparently didn’t sit well with her dad.
“Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family,” he reportedly said, “we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”
In an email reviewed by POLITICO, Donald Harris indicated he wasn’t interested in discussing the issue further publicly: “I have decided to stay out of all the political hullabaloo by not engaging in any interviews with the media,” he wrote.
