Bill Nye the ‘not so science’ guy gets skewered on Reddit AMA
The condescending “science” spokesman of the left, the guy that does horrible in every interview and debate I’ve ever seen on YouTube, Bill Nye took to Reddit last week for a “Ask me Anything” (AMA), which turned out to be a real barrel of laughs.
Here is a sample of the mechanical engineer’s scientific answers to Redditor questions:
Space and temperature
Hi Bill. If the Sun is hot, why is space cold?
Nye’s response: There is a fantastic amount of space in space. I mean it’s not all that cold, is it? It’s 3 Kelvins. Toasty.
Redditor: This answer is nonsense.
The correct answer is that “space” doesn’t have a temperature by itself. In order to talk about temperature you need to talk about something that is at that temperature. What you often hear about temperature being related to the average kinetic energy has its issues, but it’s more or less okay for the purpose at hand: if there’s nothing that can have a kinetic energy, there’s no temperature.
3 K is not the temperature of space. It’s the temperature of the cosmic microwave background. Huge difference. Space itself is not cold, nor is it hot. If you let yourself be baked by solar radiation, then you will heat up or cool down depending on how much energy you absorb and fail to lose via radiation. It’s the same mechanism as global warming, really, so it’s baffling that bill nye would get this wrong.
Physics
My brother wants to know: Why don’t electrons collapse toward the positively charged protons in the nucleus of an atom?
Nye: Magic…. No wait. It’s the nature of atomic forces. Start by noticing that it must somehow be more complicated than electrons in orbit. If it were that way, they’d spiral into the nucleus and be annihilated. The move in “orbitals” rather than orbits. If things were any other way, things would be different.
Two classic responses:
Climate change (Nye’s favorite political topic)
How do you respond to people being dismissive to you because of your past as a children’s show host?
Nye: Someone can dismiss me based on his or her perception of my credentials, but the climate is still changing at an extraordinary rate, and humans are the cause. That’s not rocket surgery. It’s science, true whether you believe it or not.
Additional Redditor: Correct me if I’m wrong Bill, but Science is a practice of measured observation. Based on those observations, we can deduce ‘facts’ about certain phenomena. These observations are limited by our ability to measure/the capability of our instruments, and as our instruments improve, so do our observations, and therefore the facts. That’s why something that was regarded as a ‘fact’ at one point in time, can later be invalidated. So when you say “It’s science, true whether you believe it or not.” aren’t you over-simplifying the scientific process? Aren’t you also acting sort of arrogant about the ‘facts’ considering their basis in increasingly complex observations? One final question before I digress: What scientific observations and according to what metric are you basing your supposedly scientific claim that gender is a spectrum?
Another Redditor really summed up the fraud that’s Bill Nye the “not so science” guy: “If I walked around in scrubs, hung a stethoscope around my neck, and called myself “Bpoag the Medicine Guy,” I would be considered a complete fraud, would I not? Even though some of my opinions and observations might be correct, I’m still not a physician…nor should I be considered one. I’m simply not qualified to speak in that realm, let alone make decisions, let alone attempt to guide public policy. Would you let your kids listen to me, and what I had to say?”
To close, let me share this comment: Bill Nye, now that you’ve completely tarnished and destroyed any shred of your reputation with the whole Cringeworthy Sex Junk song, what’s your next step? You have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering yet parade around as the world’s superior scientist, so since that crashed and burned, will your next step be pretending to be another career path?
You’d almost feel sorry for him if he wasn’t such despicable person.
