‘The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug’ Review: CGI and action dominant a great middle chapter
The second Hobbit film proved to be a strong follow-up to the first, adding a lot more adventure and humor, making The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug a great send-up in the franchise.
Following the squad of dwarfs on their journey to reclaim their land, the story promised the awakening of a dragon. Orlando Bloom returns as Legolas, joined by Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly from Lost) assisting the heroes escape the Orc attack and Luke Evans plays Bard the Bowman, who is key in the transition of the story.
There are two major action sequences in the story: a wild barrel ride down an Elvish river and the introduction titular Smaug, voiced by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Smaug is a major triumph in visual effects, with amazing CGI to bring the expressive and intimidating creature to life.
Tauriel, a character added for the film, is one of the major creative liberties taken by director Peter Jackson. Gandalf’s side adventure has been modified to fit tighter with the Lord Of The Rings mythos.
The film does suffer from the padding and extensive character development, which is the trade-off of making The Hobbit into three films. Acting is never a concern in any of these films and Smaug doesn’t disappoint.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a strong 4 out of 5 stars.
