Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs recall a false-alarm, not contaminated with Salmonella

With Easter just a month away, Frankfort, Ind. candy company, Zachary Confections Inc., issued a voluntary recall of it’s its Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs, a holiday favorite, due to the possibility of salmonella contamination last Wednesday.

Salmonella was reportedly detected during routine post-production testing, which caused the initiation of the recall on Feb. 27.

Today, Zachary says that microbial testing by an independent third party lab revealed that the candy products were negative for the pathogenic bacterium.

The company said in a press release update that “all post-production samples of Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs have now been confirmed not to contain salmonella and are safe for consumption.”

The initial recall affected products included in cases with a UPC code of 1 00 75186 31797 3 and the individual unit UPC code 075186 15797 8. The treats have a Best Buy date of Feb. 14, 2014. The recall included the following code dates: D3245D, D3145E, F3145E and D3245E.

Zachary Confections has notified the FDA of the updated testing and analysis. The initial FDA press release announcing the recall has been removed from the FDAs website.

No illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall, according to the company.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
