Yale researcher discusses Haiti cholera outbreak and link to UN peacekeepers
Earlier this month, researchers from Yale University released a report detailing the legal and medical reasons why the United Nations (UN) should been be held responsible for this cholera tragedy in Haiti.
On the Saturday, August 17 airing of Dispatch Radio, I spoke with Rosalyn Chan M.D., Dr. Chan was one of the team members from the Global Health and Justice Partnership at the Yale School of Public Health.
Dr. Chan explained the evidence and the link between the UN peacekeepers from Nepal and the cholera outbreak that has sickened hundreds of thousands and killed over 8,000 since October 2010.
She also says that the cholera outbreak is expected to go on for at least another decade, this is after the Caribbean country was cholera-free for at least a century.
In addition, Chan answers the question on what actions the UN should take to help rectify this wrong.
We closed the interview with a discussion on the legal recourse the Haitian people have with the offending parties.
