World Health Organization kicks off ‘Universal Health Coverage’ meeting today
“I regard universal coverage as the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer.” This is one of the statements made today by Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of her opening remarks at a WHO/World Bank ministerial-level meeting on universal health coverage (UHC) in Geneva today.
Chan continues, “It is the best way to cement the health gains made during the previous decade. It operationalizes the highest ethical principles of public health. It is a powerful social equalizer and the ultimate expression of fairness.
“The recent enthusiasm for universal coverage occurs in a world in which social inequalities, in income levels, in opportunities, and in access to health care, are at the greatest levels seen in at least half a century.
“At a time when policies in so many sectors are actually increasing social inequalities, I would be delighted to see health lead the world towards greater fairness in ways that matter to each and every person on this planet.”
The two day meeting, Feb. 18-19, brings together ministers of finance and health from 27 countries with other high-level stakeholders.
Issues to be discussed include exploring ways that countries are progressing towards universal health coverage, sharing innovative solutions and identifying actions the global community can take to support efforts.
According to the WHO, UHC is about ensuring that all people have access to services that promote good health, prevent illness, offer treatment and rehabilitation. The services must be of good quality and effective, and people must not suffer financial hardship when paying for them.
