Women Mistreated Around The Globe Throughout History

Women have been treated poorly throughout history in many cultures. It is well documented that hundreds of years ago that women were seen as second class. This will outline the instances were women were treated so poorly that it would make many people cringe. The examples in this article will give instances in the last 100 years.

Women In Extremist Arab Countries
To make this extremely clear, not all Arab countries treat their women this way. There has been generalizations about the Arab countries as a whole when the extremism is only a small percentage of the Arab and Muslim people. Egypt has been said to be the worst place for women as a whole. According to the Huffington Post, 99.3 percent of women are subject to sexual harassment. If you think that you may have mistakenly read that statistic, that might as well be rounded up to 100 percent due to the fact that women may have been afraid to tell the truth to the people doing the survey.

Women in some towns outside of the metropolis of Cairo are used as currency. This is like a modern day slave trade and all of these women that are trafficked suffer mental and physical abuse. Forced marriages are so commonplace that nobody would bat an eye when it was mentioned. Women throughout the region are being abducted and raped by extremist groups that preach Islam but do not follow in its peaceful preaching and beliefs. In Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive. This is such a basic right in many countries that not having the freedom to drive restricts so much in a woman’s life.

Asian Comfort Women
Asian comfort women were used in the years of WWII and subsequent years after that. Comfort women were the victims of government sanctioned forced prostitution. Japanese comfort women were prevalent to keep soldiers happy and the thoughts of mutiny down. These women often came from Japanese occupied territories where kidnapping of these women was commonplace. Promises of work in factory or as nurses lured these women to the brothels.

Basically the government either kidnapped or tricked these women into committing prostitution. If a comfort girl refused to perform their duties, they were executed without question. Korean comfort women were used to keep the US soldiers stationed there happy. Lawmakers proposed to have more government trained comfort women in 1960, but the reason is so devious it might make you cringe. This was not to just make the US soldiers happy, but to have them spend their money in Korea rather than spend their money in Japan.

As you can see, there are many places where women are not treated even as human beings. Spreading awareness of this is the only way American civilians can have any impact. It is dangerous for many of these women to speak out as public executions of women with a voice are common. All of this being said, helping to get the right people in power who view both genders as equal is a great step to take and to stay away from those with extremist ideals can help women in their quest for equality.
