Wisconsin: Body found in Dells Pond identified as missing man , Nicholas Wagener

A body found Thursday near Dells Pond in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has been identified by authorities as U.S. Army veteran Nicholas M. Wagener.

Nicholas Wagener

Wagener, 38, of Eau Claire, had been missing, identified as a veteran at risk with the Eau Claire Police Department issuing a Green Alert. Wagener was last seen Sept. 5 on the north side of Eau Claire after indicating he was going camping.

He was reported as missing on September 11th.

“The search is over. Although we did not get the outcome we had hoped, prayed and chanted for we must now comfort ourselves knowing Nick is finally at peace,” Wagener’s mother, Jinger Mandt, posted Saturday on Facebook. “Our beautiful, intelligent, loving first born son was truly a gentle soul who brought us 38 years of joy. Thank you to all of you that shared our post and the veterans Green Alert post as we searched for him.”

Eau Claire police said they received a report at 2:12 p.m. Thursday of a deceased male along the embankment of Dells Pond at the dead end of Churchill Street.

Eau Claire Police spokeswoman Bridget Coit confirmed Saturday the body had been identified as Wagener and said no foul play is suspected.

Wagener left without contacting anyone for long periods of time in the past, most recently living in the woods using his advanced outdoor survival skills.

Wagener made statements that are concerning for his mental health, but no overt statements of self-harm were made.

If contacted, please check welfare and notify the Eau Claire Police Department at 715-839-4972.
