William Aydelott not fit to stand trial, says judge as teen rambles in court about death and Sharon Aydelott

The Florida teen responsible for brutally murdering his mother has been deemed incompetent for trial by a judge in the Santa Rosa County courts.

William Brandon Aydelott, age 17, made several statements while in court about the “world’s perfect formula” and reincarnation, but after entering a not guilty plea to the first-degree murder of his mother, Sharon Aydelott, the teen was declared unfit to stand trial.

State Attorney Bill Eddins defined competency as a defendant’s ability to comprehend court proceedings which prompted psychological evaluations and recommendations of two experts who determined Aydelott was incompetent to proceed.

Aydelott’s next hearing is scheduled for July 14.

But, “it could be six months. It could be shorter. It could be longer,” Eddins said. “At that time, we expect he will be brought back before the court and the proceedings will then continue regarding his criminal cases.”

The court will continue to engage in the discovery process while Aydelott receives treatment.

“There are two issues here. One is competency to proceed, which is the only issue that’s been determined today,” Eddins said. “When he is brought back, any other issues, such as insanity at the time of the offense, can be evaluated at that time, if it has been raised by the defense. Of course it hasn’t been raised at this point.”

Eddins said if doctors determine that Aydelott suffers from a treatable mental illness, they will work to heal him so he can go to court.
