Wild Chef outbreak: Norovirus confirmed, restaurant reopened

In a follow-up to a story last week, the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness that, according to the most recent reported numbers, sickened 300 patrons at a Michigan restaurant has been confirmed as norovirus, according to an MLive report Monday.

The report by MLive’s Angie Jackson also notes that  Ottawa County health officials approved the reopening of the restaurant on Apr. 7.

To reopen, Wild Chef disinfected all of its equipment, floors, walls and ceilings. The restaurant developed new written policies and procedures, and provided staff training on proper washing of hands, food preparation, use of gloves and reporting of illnesses, the report states. Wild Chef employees also completed a food handlers’ training program and were given an examination on the material. All prepared foods were discarded.

The restaurant voluntarily closed Tuesday, April 1 after being notified that a number of dining customers had reported gastrointestinal illnesses to the health department.

Norovirus causes more than 20 million illnesses annually, and it is the leading cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks in the United States.
