Why are our children getting handcuffed in school?

I’ve been seeing an unusual amount of stories lately where young children, as young as 6, are being taken out of school in handcuffs by local police for “offenses” like doodling on the desk and bring a plastic butter knife to school.

New York City 12 year old student, Alexa Gonzalez was caught doodling on a desk the words “”I love my friends Abby and Faith. Lex was here 2/1/10 :)”.

Instead of contacting the parents, after school detention and other appropriate punishment, the principal called the police which in turn took the 7th grade criminal out of school in handcuffs!

In another case, a six year old Port St. Lucie, Florida child, Haley Franklin, was handcuffed and taken to a mental institution (Baker Act) for “being disruptive on several occasions at school, throwing objects, hitting administration personnel and screaming uncontrollably.” Geez, no trauma there!

The zero tolerance policies that cropped up after the 1999 Columbine shooting have given principals, administrators and teachers free reign to go totally overboard with nonsensical actions against innocent acts like bringing a plastic butter knife to school, throwing erasers, and drawing a picture of a gun!

Do these petty acts that many of us may have done at one time or another (tell me you never wrote on a school desk when you were a kid) really require the Gestapo techniques afflicted on these very young children? Should an 11 year old be handcuffed and charged with a felony for bringing a plastic butter knife to school?

Where is the common sense?  It is surely needed in our school systems as indicated by the above actions.

It’s a shame that every time there is a “crisis” in this country, our lawmakers take advantage of it by writing the most restrictive and ridiculous laws.
