Who stood by Charles Rangel, voting against censure

CrainsNew York.com writes: “On the darkest day of his four decades in Congress, Rep. Charles Rangel found a friend in Republican colleague Peter King of Long Island, who crossed party lines last week to vote against the censure that was ultimately meted out, 333-79.

They detailed the “Support for Mr. Rangel in the New York delegation was concentrated downstate, while upstate members were generally against him. Downstate exceptions included two Long Island Democrats, Reps. Timothy Bishop and Steve Israel, and outgoing Democratic Rep. Michael McMahon of Staten Island. Mr. McMahon was the only member of the city’s delegation to vote to censure Mr. Rangel, whose use of apartments at below-market rates, failure to pay taxes on a Dominican villa, and fundraising using congressional supplies landed him in the well of the House of Representatives.”

“I don’t believe the findings warrant the censure,” King said before the votes. “Censure is a very extreme penalty. If expulsion is [like] the death penalty, censure is life in prison.”

But Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who chairs the ethics committee, and Republicans on the panel would not back down, arguing that Rangel had several chances to handle the matter differently and agree to settle for a reprimand, which the panel offered him back in July. Instead, Rangel chose to fight and opt for public trial.

The delusions of Rangel was shared on the floor of the House and repeated when he spoke o the media: “I know in my heart I’m not going to be judged by this Congress,” Rangel said after the 333-79 vote to censure the Congressman.

“I leave here knowing that everybody knows I’m an honest guy,” he added, speaking to reporters after vote for censure.

“Congressman Rangel violated the House rules, and for that I voted to reprimand him, because that was the appropriate response to the mistakes that he made,” New York Rep. Maurice Hinchey said in a prepared statement. “I stopped short of censure because that punishment has historically been applied in response to much more egregious violations made by Congressman Rangel.”

There were 77 Democrats and 2 Republicans who VOTED NO to the censure of Charles Rangel. An “X” vote denotes “not voting” – full list below.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Assistant to the Speaker Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (D-Conn.) voted for censure. Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), who will serve as vice chairman of the Democratic caucus in the next Congress, voted against censure.
