Police report that New York woman, Lisa Margaritis, drowned Friday while taking part in a stand-up paddleboard yoga class on Long Island.

Southold Police chief Martin Flatley said that Margaritis, 48, was described as an experienced paddleboarder and reportedly was trying to help another woman who was struggling in the strong current under the Long Island Rail Road bridge in Hashamomuck Pond when Margaritis’ paddleboard got caught on a bridge piling and she fell in.
Flatley explained that Margaritis was tethered to the board and wasn’t able to free herself.
The Albertson woman was finally freed by a passing jogger who jumped into the water, helping pull the board from the piling and bring her to land.
Southold police, the fire department’s rescue squad and a hospital paramedic arrived and began CPR.
Det. Sgt. John Sinning stated that Margaritis was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead shortly after the 9:52 a.m.
Jean Weber, Margaritis’ mother, said she was “devastated” over the death of her only daughter, but that she was not surprised to learn that the registered nurse died while trying to help someone else get out of danger.
“She was a hero in my eyes,” said Weber, of Albertson and Southold, calling her daughter “a very good kid. She wanted to save somebody else. She was always kind.”
