Warner confirmed to be moving ahead on ‘Man of Steel 2’
Despite subpar reviews to Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both films garnered a strong turn out in theaters and Warner Bros is now rumored to move moving ahead on a new Superman film.
According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. has now put Man of Steel 2 in active development, marking the first new entry in the DCEU since the studio first announced that slate of films back in 2014. While details are unknown, The Wrap cites sources saying that Man of Steel 2 is a “top priority” for the studio, as is “getting the character right for audiences.”
Man Of Steel earned $668 million at the global box office and this summer’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which picked up where that film left off, has pulled in $872 million.
The exact quote at the Wrap: “DC has been silent on a sequel to Man of Steel featuring Superman solo, leading many frustrated fanboys to believe that another film wasn’t going to happen. But a person close to the project told TheWrap that Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance.”
Despite the busy film slate: Wonder Woman due on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017 with solo Aquaman and Flash films in 2018, MOS 2 being fast tracked still won’t put the film in theaters before 2020 (2019 would be a reach).
At the Time Warner Investor Day in 2014, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara announced a slate of nine films with members of DC Comics. Additionally, a solo Ben Affleck led Batman film is in the works so that 10 films in four years and this new project makes eleven.
Critics and fans have offered up harsh criticisms of these new films, but the finances warrant more projects and Tsujihara could very well be primed to announced a Harley Quinn standalone film, a Suicide Squad sequel and a new film for Superman.
While the fanboys get can be disappointed, the films are churning out big bucks for the studio, so expect more to come.
