‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ synopsis

War for the Planet of the Apes, the next installment in Fox’s rebooted prequel Apes franchise, has offered very little for fans. Now the first footage arrived at New York Comic-Con, with director Matt Reeves, star Andy Serkis, and producer Dylan Clark sharing a first look at the film on Thursday.

In addition to the Comic-Con announcement, the first official synopsis for War for the Planet of the Apes has also been unveiled:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins this own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Reeves previously told Collider that War would be “about [Caesar] becoming the seminal figure for ape history”, likening him to Moses.

Reeves previously said about the prequel story arc eventually running into the 1968 storyline:

The idea would never be to remake the ’68 film. There might be some of those events from another perspective, and obviously to also see them as events that grew out of everything that we’ve been watching from this new iteration. They wouldn’t be exactly the same either. So if, and when, we ever get there, which I think is an exciting notion, it would definitely not be a remake but it would be sort of a re-telling of those events from a new perspective. And the events themselves would probably be a bit different since they will have grown out of these films.

Woody Harrelson has been added as one of the “human villains” in the new film.

Gabriel Chavarria has signed on for an undisclosed role, one that the THR says  will be “small” but other reports say that Chavarria landed one of the two human lead roles.

War for the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters on July 14, 2017.
