‘Voltron: From Days of Long Ago’ review: Perfect for new or die-hard fans
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the influential classic TV show Voltron: Defender of the Universe, Perfect Square of VIZ Media released a book with in-depth and never-before-seen photos and information titled: Voltron: From Days of Long Ago.
Perfect for a newer fan, a casual viewer or the Voltron aficionado,Voltron: From Days of Long Ago brings together such notable writers, animators and creators as Brian Smith (the writer of Perfect Square’s bestselling Voltron Force series oforiginal graphic novels), Marc Morrell (co-host of Let’s Voltron!, the official Voltron podcast), Joshua Bernard (founder of toy archive CollectionDX), Jacob Chabot (Eisner-nominated cartoonist) and Jeremy Corray (former creative director, World Events Productions).
Packed with awesome pictures, From Days of Long Ago offers great interviews, vintage photos, a detailed long at the toys and impact of the hit show which began in 1984.
Writer Marc Handler revealed that he slept at the office, enduring the long hours to meet production demands. “…I’d sleep on the floor. I kept a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap in the back of my desk drawer. In the morning I’d clean up, and when everyone else came in, I’d act cheery and pretend I just got there early.”
The show found massive success, finding a place in pop culture history. Voltron was part of a Sprite commercial, referenced in the hit song “Shake Ya Tailfeather” in 2003 and joined other pop culture icons in a 2013 Met Life Super Bowl spot. All of this and much more are included in this amazing anthology.
Some of the photos took me make to my childhood and I could show the next generation which one(s) I owned. The detailed analysis is fantastic with colorful photos and commentary. Some die-hards may be expecting more interviews or intricate details on the Voltron continuity etc…both are scarce.
The cover is awesome, the layout is nice, plenty to like here.
