Vladimir Putin signs ‘gay propaganda’ bill into law in Russia
Just days after Russia’s upper house, the Federation House, has approved a bill introducing fines for propaganda of non-traditional sex relations to minors, including in the media, on the internet and via viral adverts, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the controversial bill into law, according to multiple news outlets.
According to RT.com, the law introduces administrative liability and fines of up to a million rubles (over US$30,000) for propaganda to minors of non-traditional sexual relations, including in the media, on the internet and via viral adverts. Individuals could be fined up to 100,000 rubles ($3,000) and foreigners could be fined the same amount, held in jail for 15 days and deported.
On Saturday, Russian police detained dozens of people who clashed during a protest in Saint Petersburg against the above legislation.
Up to 100 people took part in the march organised by the group Ravnopraviye (Equal Rights) to protest against the bill, The Guardian reports.
In addition to the “gay propaganda” law, Fox News reports that Putin also signed into law yesterday, a bill imposing jail terms and fines on those who offend religious believers.
This bill imposes fines and jail terms of up to three years for people who insult believers, with the harshest punishment reserved for offensive actions carried out in places of worship.
This is likely in response to the actions by fem-punk band, Pussy Riot last year at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

YESTERDAY, I SAW A VIDEO OF THIS PROTEST HELD AT, “Marsovo Polye” (“Field of Mars”) – A LARGE PARK IN THE CENTER OF SAINT PETERSBURG, RUSSIA. [In the video, a fight “broke-out” and a male was shown with a “bloodied” head; but, since everyone was in “street” clothes, I could not tell who committed the violence (a news report says anti-gay activists assaulted gay-activists)]. THIS PROTEST PROVIDES A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW ANTI-HOMOSEXUAL PUBLICATIONS [LIKE, Global Dispatch AND Guardian] REPORT NEWS ON gay-rights DIFFERENTLY FROM HOMOSEXUAL PUBLICATIONS. THIS ARTICLE STATES, “Up to 100 people took part in the march organi[s]ed by the group Ravnopraviye … ;” THIS STATEMENT IMPLIES SEVERAL “radical gays” STORMED “Marsovo Polye.” BUT, ACCORDING TO A HOMOSEXUAL PUBLICATION, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 240 PARTICIPANTS – WHICH CONSISTED OF ABOUT 40 gay-activists AND 200 anti-gay activists; 50 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED, INCLUDING 8 anti-gay activists.
THIS IS THE TYPE OF STORY WHICH NEEDS TO BE REPORTED BY AN AMERICAN JOURNALIST WHO IS FAMILIAR WITH RUSSIAN LAW. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING “Marsovo Polye” IS A PLACE WHERE PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS CAN BE HELD. IF THIS PROTEST TOOK PLACE BEFORE President Vladimir Putin SIGNED THIS LAW, DID THE gay-rights activists HAVE A RIGHT TO USE THE PARK? OR, DID THE gay-activists KNOW THEY WERE BREAKING THE LAW PRIOR TO ATTENDANCE? [In other words, on 29 June it was okay to protest at “Marsovo Polye” as long as homosexuality is not mentioned???].
HOMOSEXUALS ARE EXPERTS WHEN IT COMES TO “OPERATING IN THE SHADOWS.” I AM HOMOSEXUAL – NOT, gay. SO, I SUPPORT President Putin’s position BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY HOMOSEXUALS WHO HAVE NO INTEREST IN “legalized” gay-rights.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS “GOING TO END-UP GETTING” HOMOSEXUALS AROUND THE WORLD BEATEN-UP OR KILLED. THIS MELEE AT “Marsovo Polye” WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF United States Supreme Court HAD NOT “FLAPPED ITS LIBERAL WINGS.”
