Visit the beautiful Dalmatian Coast of Croatia

The Dalmatian Coast of Croatia runs down the western side of the country and is dotted with many picturesque seaside towns, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The main hub of this beautiful coastline is the city of Split, which is a fascinating destination, filled with UNESCO-listed attractions and museums.

A comfortable stay in Split

Split is the ideal starting point for exploring the Dalmatian Coast. The city hosts many excellent hotels and is also perfect for Croatia villa holidays. Once settled into your accommodation, head out and explore the city.

The center of the city circles around the Palace of Diocletian, dating back to the 3rd century and built as a retirement palace for the Roman emperor. Rather than just a display of ruins, shops, restaurants and bars are set within the ancient Roman walls, making it a unique experience to explore, shop and dine among history.

While the palace was built in the late 3rd century, materials from the ruins were used to build a cathedral during the Middle Ages. There are also medieval fortifications, 12th and 13th century Romanesque churches and Gothic palaces dating back to the 15th century.

Outside of the older part of the city, relax on the Riva Promenade, a modern waterfront zone which is ideal for a sunset stroll in the fresh sea air. When taking a break from the many attractions of Split, head out on daytrips to the surrounding areas.

Beach resorts on the Dalmatian Coast

Driving south from Split, head to the Makarska Riviera, a gorgeous coastal spot with beaches hugged by pine forests. Along the way visit the towns of Tucepi, Brela and Zivogosce with their pretty bays or coves overlooking crystal clear waters, ideal for swimming, scuba diving and other popular water sports.

The islands of the Dalmatian Coast

Besides the pretty resorts, the Dalmatian coastline is also dotted with many islands to explore. One of the top spots to visit is Hvar, with its many trendy waterside bars and excellent restaurants. Besides these more modern attractions, the port town of Hvar features 13th-century walls and the Hvar Cathedral, dating from the Renaissance era. There is also a hilltop fortress offering sweeping views of the island and sea.

There are many coves and beaches to explore and photographers will particularly appreciate the island’s beautiful lavender fields. From Hvar, take a boat excursion to the Pakleni Islands nearby, where many more secluded beaches can be found, ideal for a relaxing on the sand with a picnic and a bottle of wine.

The island of Brac is another great excursion point, across the Brac Channel and also across the Hvar Channel. Here can be seen the highest peak of the Croatian islands, Vidova Gora (or Vitus’ Mount). While part of the coastline of Brac is steep and rocky, there are lower, sandy sections on the southern side of the island.

Enjoy a vacation in Croatia this year and explore the Dalmatian Coast. With its combination of history, modernity and scenic attractions, this is one of the most beautiful and diverse destinations in the world.
