Vague Science; How Drugs Like Oxycontin and Valium Can Lead to Addiction

Oxycontin and valium are prescription drugs that doctors prescribe for legitimate healthcare concerns. The pain reliever oxycontin provides relief for up to 12 hours. However, it contains a strong narcotic property that causes addiction in some individuals. Doctors prescribe valium mainly to relieve anxiety, but it can also stop seizures in some patients. For some people, the calming effect of valium causes them to desire to take the drug more often than prescribed. Both types of prescribed drugs have the potential for addiction and can require the need for drug rehab to get off them.

Oxycontin and Addiction

Drug manufacturers create synthetic oxycontin hydrochloride in a laboratory. It’s a derivative of thebaine, a type of opium alkaloid. The reason that oxycontin becomes addictive to the point of needing drug addiction treatment is that it has a substantial effect on the central nervous system. It contains the same properties of mu-opioid agonist present in morphine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labels oxycontin as a Schedule II narcotic, which is the highest level of control that it places on prescription drugs.

Oxycontin addiction starts when people take the drug for other purposes than relieving moderate to severe physical pain. The first signs of oxycontin addiction are just like any other prescription drugs or illicit drugs. Addicted people continue to take it regularly despite obvious physical, emotional, or financial consequences or conflict in close relationships. The cravings become intense and the person takes it as quickly as possible to activate the brain’s reward center to prompt pleasant feelings. Some of the most common physical symptoms related to oxycontin abuse or addiction include:

  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Euphoric feeling
  • Increased pain sensitivity with high doses
  • Lack of coordination
  • Nausea
  • Require more of the drug to produce the same effect
  • Slower rate of breathing

Valium and Addiction

As a predominant anti-anxiety medication, valium reduces hyperactivity in the brain to allow the user to feel calmer and more relaxed. It belongs to the benzodiazepine family of drugs. However, valium remains in the body much longer than other drugs in the same classification. The higher the dose, the more the person experiences a feeling of euphoria and intense calm. This can quickly lead to addiction and the need to investigate drug rehab centers because the person with a prescription for valium seeks to recreate these pleasant sensations.

The following are some of the most commonly reported symptoms experienced by people who enter drug addiction treatment mainly due to the use of valium:

  • Balance difficulties
  • Blue lips
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness
  • Double vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Memory issues
  • Overall weak sensation
  • Slurred speech

While there’s nothing pleasant about experiencing these symptoms, people who recognize several of them can get the help they need to live a life free of addiction by enrolling in drug rehab.

Legal Drugs Can Be Just as Addicting

Some people find it shocking that taking a prescribed medication can cause addiction to the point of needing to investigate drug rehab centers. It’s important to keep in mind that taking a drug outside of its prescribed capacity doesn’t make it safe just because it’s legal. The first thing the person addicted to oxycontin, valium, or another legal drug must do in drug addiction treatment is to eliminate the drug from their body through the detox process. From there, the drug rehab program will help the addicted individual explore what caused the addiction and help them explore healthier ways of coping with life’s challenges.
