UPS shooter Jimmy Lam killed three co-workers, Mike Lefiti as one victim
A gunman shot and killed three people at a United Parcel Service facility in San Francisco on Wednesday morning before fatally shooting himself in front of police officers. Six others were injured from gunshot wounds and officials have confirmed he was a worker for UPS.
The Chronicle has identified one of the victims as 46-year-old Mike Lefiti of Hercules.
Assistant Chief Toney Chaplin told the press early on that ““We believe this incident is not related to terrorism” as Steve Gaut, a UPS spokesman, said the shooter was a driver and in uniform.
A CBS reports states that a witness says Lam murdered the three co-workers “execution style.”
ABC 7’s Dan Noyes reports on the shooter’s name, Jimmy Lam, via a fellow UPS worker, who further told him that Lam “had it out for a manager.”
The workers involved in the shooting were gathering for their morning meeting before heading out to make deliveries, he said.
The shooting occurred at 8:55 a.m. and prompted police dispatch against the “active shooting” and they issued a shelter in place alert to the neighborhood.
Police found the victims and evacuated them immediately when they arrived, Chaplin explained. Officers then determined that the gunman was still inside the facility and actively targeting people.
When the police team entered the building and located Lam, he then turned his handgun on himself, said Chaplin.
“The suspect put the gun to his head and immediately discharged the weapon,” he said.
According to ABC 7’s source, Lam is in his mid-40s and resides in the Sunset District with his children.
Mayor Ed Lee tweeted his condolences for the victims of the shooting and voiced his appreciation for the city’s police and first responders.
“We are always saddened by the loss of life to gun violence. Any shooting is one shooting too many,” Lee tweeted. “I want to offer my condolences to the individuals & families affected by the senseless act of violence at the UPS facility in Potrero Hill.”
Lam had a history of mental illness, according to NBC San Francisco’s Laura Garcia Cannon.
The UPS facility is on the border of the Mission District and Potrero Hill neighborhoods.
