64-year-old professor, Dr. Margo Husby died February 13 from an infection from the same organism that caused the 2009 pandemic.

Greg Scheelar, Husby’s son, said how surprised he was that it was H1N1, “I thought this was done, I thought this was over”, according to a CTV News report Sunday.

According to the report, Husby checked into hospital about four weeks ago after several days of fighting what she thought was a bad cold or flu.

Doctors diagnosed a virus and soon realized it was H1N1. Everyone believed she would recover until the very end.

The Alberta Health Services Medical Officer of Health for Calgary says H1N1 is one of three flu strains they’re seeing this year, including H3N2 and Influenza B.

In an In Memoriam posted on the University’s website they write:

Margo has been an inspired teacher and great friend to everyone in the Communication and Culture department and the Faculty of Arts over the years. Margo began as a mature student in the undergraduate Communications Studies program, and went on to complete a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy here at the University of Calgary. A strong believer in lifelong learning, Margo was near completion of a fourth degree, a Master of Social Work, at the time of her death. She will be much missed by colleagues, students and alumni.

A funeral service for Dr. Margo Husby will be held on Tuesday, February 19, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church – 1600 Acadia Drive S.E.
