UK hotel replaces Bible with erotic novel
If you are a traveler in the small village of Crosthwaite, UK and you stay at the Damson Dene Hotel, when you look in your nightstand you won’t find the standard Gideon Bible anymore, instead what you’ll find is the BDSM E.L. James novel.
The rural getaway in the English countryside has replaced the Gideon Bible with the first installment of the erotic trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, because of popular demand according to hotel management.
According to a report in the Westmoreland Gazette, Hotel manager Wayne Bartholomew, who starred in Channel 4’s first series of The Hotel, said the book was all people were talking about but many were too shy to buy it.
“I thought it would be a special treat for our guests to find it in their bedside cabinet and that includes the men too,” he said. “They are as desperate to get their hands on a copy as the women.”
He goes on to justify the replacement of the Bible by saying, “The Gideon Bible is full of references to sex and violence, although it’s written using more formal language, so James’s book is easier to read.
Fifty Shades of Grey may be all the craze according to Bartholomew,; however, not everyone is on the same page. Rev. Michael Woodcock of the nearby St Mary’s Parish Church expressed his disapproval and disappointment with the decision.
Woodcock said, “It is a great shame that Bibles have been removed from rooms and very inappropriate to have been replaced by an explicit erotic novel,” according to the report.
He goes on, “The Bible remains a source of comfort and inspiration that many people do find helpful.”
If a guest at the Damson Dene Hotel would like a copy of the Bible, it can be found at the reception desk.
Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic novel by British author E. L. James. Set largely in Seattle, it is the first instalment in a trilogy that traces the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. It is notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism (BDSM). Source-Wikipedia
Other than his poor taste in literature, I don’t see why anyone would really have a problem with this.
Who are the people who need bibles when they check into a hotel anyway? You’d think that someone who is that devout would have a bible on them at all times.
