Two vaccine recalls in a week

CDC/ Debora Cartagena

Two of the worlds largest vaccine manufacturers  had to issue recalls of their products this week over safety and sterility concerns.

Whitehouse Station, N.J. company, Merck announced Thursday that it is recalling 39,000 doses of a vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella because it was shipped before the company finished an internal approval process.

According to a CBS News report, Merck said it accidentally shipped the batch of MMRII vaccine, but its quality, safety and effectiveness were confirmed before it went out. The recall was issued just as a precaution according to Merck.

In addition, last week Sanofi-Aventis Australia announced the recall of four batches of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin tuberculosis vaccine because the product’s sterility can’t be assured, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Canberra.

This is a “Class II” recall which means that defects could cause illness or mistreatment.

Bloomberg reports that Patricia Waghorn, Sanofi’s head of communications for Australia and New Zealand said, “Our monitoring found that the level of sterility was not at an acceptable level”.

The vaccine is also being voluntarily recalled in Canada and New Zealand, while manufacturing at a plant in Toronto is being suspended for renovation and to improve environmental quality management within the building according to Waghorn.
