Trump wins Florida, Marco Rubio drops out

The GOP race took even more turns with Tuesday primaries as Donald Trump won big in Florida, taking home all 99 delegates and forced Sen. Marco Rubio out of the race.

“While we are on the right side, this year, we are not on the winning side,” Rubio told supporters at rally near Miami.

Rubio is projected to finish second in the Sunshine State’s Republican primary, well behind front runner Trump.

The latest tallies have Trump around 45% with Rubio at 27%. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was a distant third at 17%. These figures are very speculative, but Trump is certain to take home the victory.

“While it is not God’s plan that I be president in 2016 or maybe ever, and while today my campaign is suspended, the fact that I’ve even come this far is evidence of how special America is.”

RNC counsel Ben Ginsberg wrote for Politico how the Republican shenanigans is shaping up:

“In the first presidential roll call vote at the convention, a rule in effect for the first time in 2016 automatically binds more than 90 percent of delegates to specific candidates based on those delegates’ statewide votes. That leaves only a very small pool of delegates that Trump could win over in order to reach a majority on the first ballot: 166 delegates who are already unbound, plus an unknown number whose state laws will unbind them if their candidate drops out by the time of the convention. (There are currently 12 of these delegates, but, importantly, that number will increase if one of the current candidates drops out. For example, should Marco Rubio drop out without winning any additional delegates, 152 delegates would be added to the unbound pool, nearly doubling the number available to Trump’s powers of persuasion to gain a first-ballot majority.)” – Emphasis added, The Dispatch
