TRAGEDY: Two-week-old Mohamed Mbaye killed in Texas car crash after mother Sokhna Ghingue ran the red light
Police are investigating a fatal collision that left a 2-week-old baby dead in Grand Prairie, Texas Monday morning.
The Grand Prairie Police Department detailed the accident involving a 2012 Kia Rio west on Mayfield Road, driven by Sokhna Ghingue, 22, when she ran a red light at the southbound frontage road to Highway 161. The Kia was hit on the passenger side by a 2012 Dodge pickup. Both cars then crashed into a 2012 Toyota pickup that was stopped at the eastbound Mayfield light.
Ghingue’s son Mohamed Mbaye, a two-week-old infant in the Kia, was rushed to Children’s Medical Center where he died just after 5 p.m. Sokhna Ghingue was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.
Police said that Mbaye was properly restrained in the safety seat, but suffered critical injuries which were fatal due to his age.
No other serious injuries were reported, police say.
The crash is under investigation.
Police Sgt. Eric Hansen said Ghingue does not face any charges.
“We will consult with the DA’s office to determine if anything other than a traffic ticket is warranted,” he said.
