‘Toy Story 4′: Pixar will likely use old recorded dialogue to include Don Rickles’ Mr Potato Head
Don Rickles, who died at the age of 90, had expanded his legendary career with his role in the Toy Story franchise as Mr. Potato Head. While Disney/Pixar has already started working on the fourth installment, Rickles hadn’t yet gone in to record any of his lines, reports the Hollywood Reporter.
According to sources, Mr. Potato Head can still be included by using extra recorded material from prior films. Fans can’t imagine Disney cutting him out entirely. The technology was used with CGI in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as the late Carrie Fisher’s last line was taken from the Star Wars archives from lines she said back in 1977.
Direcotor John Lasseter remembered Rickles in a statement released by Pixar, lauding the comedian as “a comic genius, and here at Pixar we were honored to also call him a friend.”
The Palm Beach Post re-published their original Toy Story interview Thursday with Rickles on the film franchise, beginning iwth the initial casting.
“When the guy came down to see me about ‘Toy Story,’ I had to say, which I say to a lot of people, “Oh, c’mon. I don’t do Popeye and Olive Oyl and all that stuff. Voice-overs? I don’t do that.”
At that time of the interview “Toy Story has grossed more than $180 million and is slated to be given a special Oscar next month,” the article noted. Rickles was delighted he changed his mind. `”I thought it was going to be strictly for young children,” he says. “I was pleasantly surprised.”
He is also pleasantly surprised that the movie has generated new interest in him from the age group of his grandchildren. “A lot of college kids come to see me now – the 19-year-olds and so forth – and a lot of grown people come up to me at the airport, 23-25 year-olds, with a picture of Potato Head for me to sign.”
Toy Story 4 hits theaters June 15, 2018.
