Your mattress is one of the important pieces of furniture in your life. After all, it’s what helps maintain your body and keeps you comfortable as you sleep. And with proper sleep comes proper health. That’s why it’s crucial to ensure that you not only had a best mattress for your needs but also know when it’s time to get a new one.

You’ll be surprised that not many people know about when they should start changing their mattresses. There are actually quite a few telltale signs you have to watch out for. Wondering what they are?

1. Waking Up Is Painful

Have you begun waking up feeling more pain than usual? It might not be because of poor posture or the usual workout burn… Your mattress might be the culprit!

When you have an old mattress, it starts to have lumps, sags, and the material even pokes out. Because of this, the support significantly lessens. So what used to feel supportive and painless will now have you wake up with stiff body parts and grogginess.

If your old mattress isn’t giving you enough support, it won’t provide the natural spin alignment you need to keep your entire body free from pain. And if you start feeling more pain each morning, then it’s definitely time to look into a new mattress.

2. You’re Sneezing More

If you feel like you’re sneezing more despite allergy sneezing being over, or if you suffer from random asthma attacks, your bed might be the reason! But how?

This is because your aging mattress tends to collect more dust and allergens from its deteriorating quality. Over time, it will start getting inoculated with mites and dust, which are what cause the allergic reactions and asthma attacks.

While it’s helpful to regularly clean and flip your mattress, it won’t be of much help if your mattress gets too old to protect itself. If you still feel allergies despite what you do, then it’s time to get a new mattress.

3. You Feel More Lumps Than Comfort

Like mentioned, an old mattress will become more lumpy and saggy, because of its quality deteriorating from nightly use and pressure. This is natural, though it doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. So if you’re feeling like you can’t sleep properly despite the many changes you’ve tried, from sleeping position to your bedtime routine, then look at your mattress!

Because of the lumps and poking materials, you feel more discomfort, which causes you to toss and turn the entire night trying to find the right position. As a result, you don’t get enough sleep, or you continue feeling uncomfortable without quality rest.

So if you feel like your mattress is tearing apart slowly or you feel more uncomfortable than satisfied as you sleep from the lumps, then it’s time for a change.

4. Other Beds Seem More Comfortable and Supportive

When sleeping over at someone else’s place, do you find yourself feeling cozier compared to your bedroom? That’s actually a surefire sign you need a new mattress, as we don’t often feel comfortable when sleeping in other people’s beds (unless it’s a five-star hotel, that is). This is especially if you feel that your mattress is giving you less sleep than what you expect!

So if you think that your friend’s bed is much more comfortable and supportive than your own, it’s time to make some changes and see why you feel that way.

5. It’s Really Just Time to Change

Just because your bed still seems usable after years of sleeping doesn’t mean you should still keep it. The average lifespan of a bed is between eight to ten years, depending on the type and quality it’s made of.  

So if it’s been almost a decade and you start feeling the signs I mentioned above, then you might want to consider getting another mattress and throwing the old one away properly.


Regardless of how strong and durable your mattress may be, there will come a time that it needs to be replaced. And it’s best to do so before it really wears out, so you’ll be able to have continuous nights of straight sleep ahead!
