Tom Cruise confirmed for ‘Mission Impossible 6’ could shoot in 2016
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is number one at the box office, but even ahead of the film Tom Cruise confirmed that a sixth film was already in the works.
Cruise told Jon Stewart on The Daily Show that he will be back as Ethan Hunt for a sixth installment of the franchise.
“We’re starting to work on it now. We’ll probably start shooting it next summer.”
This would be an extremely fast turn around for the franchise, which began in 1996 and the other films were released in 2000, 2006 and 2011.
While Paramount has yet to officially announce the next Mission: Impossible movie, but the franchise has grossed a combined $2 billion at the worldwide box office, topping this week’s box office with over $55 million in the US.
UPDATE: Paramount Pictures vice chairman Rob Moore has now come out to support the idea of another film.
“We’re very happy to be developing this movie with Tom,” Moore told Variety. “There’s no question that Ethan Hunt deserves another film.”
Rogue Nation has already earned over $120 million globally and Cruise, now 53, served as producer on this film as well.
Christopher McQuarrie directed the new film from a screenplay he wrote with Drew Pearce. The previous films were directed by Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird, so a possible shake up for MI6 could be announced.
Cruise has been working on Mena with director Doug Liman and a sequel to Jack Reacher has been discussed. A 2016 shooting schedule would be a big surprise.
