Three Simple Ways To Get Writing

If you are a blogger, a student, or just someone who likes to write for fun, you have struggled to improve your writing. This can be a frustrating process, and sometimes it feels like you’re making no progress at all.

No one can tell you how to write. Everyone has to figure out their own way of approaching it. However, you can cultivate habits that will help you to improve your writing on your own.

Ahead are three tips to get you on track!

Practice

Supposedly, you need to practice any skill for ten thousand hours before you master it. Although this isn’t literal – you won’t write terribly for the first nine thousand hours and then suddenly become a master – it does give a good idea of how much commitment and practice it takes to become good at something.

This is the classic advice any writing website will give you. Write every day, even if it’s just a page. Think of it as exercise. You wouldn’t expect to run a marathon on the first day, and your novel won’t come bursting out the first time you touch the keyboard. Don’t be discouraged. With hard work, you’ll get there!

Routine

Setting a routine is one of the simplest ways to make sure you are practicing every day. When do you do the most writing? In the morning? After work? Set a timer for one hour and sit down with a notebook. In that time, don’t allow yourself to get distracted by your phone or computer. Just write, regardless of whether you feel like the work is good or not.

Cultivating this habit will improve your writing immensely, and after you have been doing it for a while, you will find it easier and easier to write every day.

Plan Ahead

Whether you are writing a novel or an essay, this will make your life easier. Have you ever sat down with the intention of writing and found yourself staring at a blank page? Here’s an exercise to get you past that.

Sit down with a notebook and map out a plan for what you’ll be writing that day. Giving a structure to your writing will help you to figure out exactly what you want to say. It will also make your piece more comprehensible to readers.

If you have another idea, don’t be afraid to go off the map! This is just a way to break yourself out of that blank page deadlock.

Habits For A Lifetime

Getting into the habit of writing every day can be incredibly rewarding. It allows you to see your progress as it happens, and you will enjoy going back and seeing what you were thinking about last year.

Going over old pieces will give you a new perspective on them, and maybe even some insight into your own mind. Have fun with it and don’t give up! With practice, anyone can become a great writer.
