Three Overlooked Career Opportunities

Only a few lucky people join the working world with a clear career in mind. Parents or role models have encouraged this perspective. The rest of us enter the workforce with simple goals. Since we want financial independence, we think that all we need is a job. So, we end up working at any job that offers a steady paycheck.

But as we mature, we come to understand things in a broader way. We realize that there is more to the world of work than punching a time-card. We realize that there is more to it than following corporate rules. We realize that there is more to it than doing your work well.

We yearn for job satisfaction. We look for something deeper in the world of work. We look for something that fills us with enthusiasm at the start of the day and pride at the end of it.

Just as it’s never too late to have a happy childhood, it’s never too late to have a great career.

Three promising career opportunities today can be found in health, Internet, and retail.

Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Health Career

Should you go back to school and pick a career in health?

Before deciding on a health career, see if you have an interest in this industry.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Do I like dealing with people?

Most health careers need someone who has a warm, caring, and empathic nature. There is no point in becoming a nurse if listening to people complain irritate you. The other option is to choose a health career that is research oriented. You could become a clinical laboratory scientist.

2. Do you like science?

Most health careers require a scientific perspective. Even alternative health careers require that you have scientific curiosity. You need to have an analytical approach even if you become an acupuncturist.

3. Do you like to collaborate with others?

There is a lot of teamwork in helping a patient recover from an illness. You will need to get along with other professionals in your field. Even dentists have to collaborate with many staff members.

Internet Careers

You need to have a “techie” mindset for an Internet career. If you enjoy either hardware or software works, this is an excellent field for you.

Again, like the health field, there are many choices available, for instance:

· You could provide support for cloud computing products and services.

· You could become a programmer

· You could become a help desk support specialist.

· You could become an information researcher

· You could become a a web site designer or developer.

These are only a few possibilities. Picking the right one depends on your other interests, too. If, for example, you have an artistic streak, you could blend your interest in art with your love for computers by becoming a graphic designer. If this interests you, look for local schools for graphic design to learn how to qualify for this type of work.

Although the Internet has grown enormously in the 21st century, this industry shows no sign of slowing down. According to Monster.com, “Jobs such as web developers and support specialists will see the best growth over the next 10 years, each increasing 20 percent by 2022. Although it won’t see as much growth, the information research sector of internet careers is still expected to go up by a healthy 15 percent in the same amount of time.”

This global website that connects people to jobs also considers the Internet the right place to be for a healthy salary. “Even though they’re at the bottom of the pay-scale, support specialists still average $48,900 annually. You may have to build up a reputation as a star web developer but, once you do, you should be earning at least a median annual wage of $62,500. Information researchers are at the top of the ladder with their Ph.D. educations which command an average annual salary of $102,190.”

Retail Careers

Although a job as a sales clerk will help you get your foot in the door, a retail career actually begins with retail management.

Retail management is much more than sales. You have to be a natural leader. You have to have strong customer support skills. And you have to have a knack for motivating, training, and developing your sales associates.

You will run the entire shop or department. You will be responsible for motivating the sales team, for overseeing vendors, for managing inventory, and for creating attractive store displays. You will also have to monitor sales figures and forecast future sales volumes. In other words, you will have more than a 9 to 5 job. Your income depends on where you work. If you run a small store, you could earn around $30,000. If you are a district manager, you could earn about $50,000.

What’s the Right Career for You?

Rather than focus on how much you can earn, the first thing to do is think about your own interests. If you are a natural caregiver, then the health care industry will work for you. If you like techie things, then the Internet industry will suit you. And if you love managing and selling, then you’ll thrive in the retail sector.
