‘Thor The Dark World’ Review: Better than the first film, almost as good as ‘The Avengers’
Fans may be pleasantly surprised by Thor: The Dark World as it will likely exceed their expectations with more action, a ton of great humor and some fun cameos.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has spent the last two years since the New York in Avengers restoring order to the nine realms of the cosmos, but just as peace settles, a previously locked-away dark energy called the Aether seeps out. It leaks into Natalie Portman’s astrophysicist, Jane Foster, awakening a previously vanquished species of Dark Elves, led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston).
They would like to see the universe returned to complete darkness.
After the war begins Thor is left with a distressing option, he must partner with his deceptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who is imprisoned for murdering thousands of humans, to face Malekith and his powerful legion.
Hiddleston, as he did in both Avengers and Thor, steals every scene. Director Alan Taylor reportedly welcomed Joss Whedon rewrites and may deserve some credit for the levity and plot twists which make Dark World so enjoyable.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki in ‘The Avengers’
While critics will certainly target the predictability of the film, how many superhero film formulas can there be, the journey is truly entertaining.
Kat Jennings returns as sarcastic “intern,” partnering with an “intern” of her own and highlight the supporting cast which truly shines. A small part by Chris O’Dowd as Jane’s date was a welcome surprise.
Marvel Studios has the edges buffed out to know the magic to entertaining moviegoers. Malekith is no Loki and the audience will be thankful he’s along for the ride to supplement this faceless villain choice. Fans cared more about the characters in Avengers, but Dark World will rank higher than expected on the lists of favorites when the tallies are complete.
