Thor 4 gets title and Natalie Portman will be Lady Thor

Thor: Love and Thunder is coming Nov. 5, 2021, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at SDCC. The new film will be the fourth in the series, starring Chris Hemsworth, with Taika Waititi on for writing and directing. Perhaps the biggest news: Waititi has announced that Natalie Portman will be Lady Thor in Thor 4.

Waititi said: “That storyline [by Jason] is incredible is full emotion, love and thunder and introduces for the first time female Thor,” referring to the comic book storyline by Jason Aaron.

The concept of Jane becoming Thor was first explored in a What If comic from 1978, it wasn’t until Aaron and Russell Dauterman’s Thor run in 2014 that the idea truly became a reality.

The actress posted on Instagram the other day saying how excited she was to play the part and shared a picture of her on stage with Mjolnir. She captioned it: “Remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked.”

Aaron retweeted the announcement, replying with “Well wow.” In a subsequent tweet he added, “Consider me thunderously excited. The Jane Foster Thor storyline I did with [Dauterman], (Eisner winner!) [Matt Wilson] & so many more talented artists is one of my proudest moments in comics. I can’t wait to see [Taika Waititi] & Natalie Portman bring the Goddess of Thunder to life.”

The premise was that In Thor 4 #1 (published in December 2014), the hero became unworthy of wielding Mjolnir, resulting in the hammer being stuck on the moon. But Mjolnir had plans, as it telepathically sought out Jane Foster, having realized over the years that she would be a fine custodian for its power. With Heimdall assisting her in getting to the moon, Foster lifted the hammer (the inscription promptly changed to “Whosoever hold this hammer, if she be worthy, shall possess the power of… Thor.”) and boom! Female Thor.

Male Thor was a little put out by this development, but eventually made his peace when he saw that Foster was indeed worthy enough for the title. He relinquished his mantle, renaming himself Odinson and went off to wander the galaxy.

Tessa Thompson will be back as Valkyrie and here’s what the actress said: “I think first of all as king, she needs to find her new queen. That would be her first order of business… what’s cool about Asgard, as has already been mentioned, Asgard is not a place but a people…. And then hopefully she’ll hangout with Love and Thunder. The love I feel for him, gives me Thunder all over.”

If you read that as a gay reference, you’d be correct. Kevin Feige confirmed the inclusion of the LGBT community: “Yes that’s the case, and will be the case not just with [Valkyrie] but with other characters in some of the movies we talked about today,” referring to The Eternals.

Waititi joked around a bit about what Thor is up to this time. “Is there an ongoing relationship between Thor and Korg?” the filmmaker inquired. “Do they continue the love and affection that they established in Ragnarok? Who knows! …There’s nothing more powerful in the world than love!”

Hemsworth added, “And thunder.” To which Waititi continued, “And the combination…I’d drop this microphone but it’s too expensive.”

Waititi previewed the move: “When we were shooting Ragnarok I was reading one storyline by Jason Aaron called The Mighty Thor and for those of you know how that story line it’s incredible it’s full of emotion and love and thunder and it introduces for the first time female Thor. For us there’s only one person who could play that role… Natalie Portman”

“Feels pretty good. I always had a little hammer envy,” the V For Vendetta star said during the panel, swinging the hammer a bit.
