The untitled Star Wars standalone film will open in theaters on December 16th, 2016 with Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm recently announcing that Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz (About A Boy, the upcoming Cinderella) to work on the screenplay.
Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga.
Following this December’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this stand-alone film, there’s Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017 (the sequel to The Force Awakens), and then Josh Trank’s standalone Star Wars feature in 2018.
